Welcome to Human Decency FIRST, a citizen action organization headquartered in New Orleans, LA.

This organization grew out of the horrendous murder of 2-year-old Ja'Shaun Powell. His murder, alledgedly committed by his father, was so horrible that it prompted several to begin to look at the roots of crime in the city. We also looked even further at the divides and attitudes in the city. We decided that improvements didn't always have to come from city government, and in fact, in many cases it was not their responsibility to deal with it.

As citizens of the city, we launched Human Decency FIRST.

Human Decency FIRST has no religious, ethnic, political, educational or corporate affiliations. Volunteer, Board and committee positions are open to all citizens of New Orleans and the surrounding area who are passionate about seeing New Orleans move forward and begin to solve problems that have grown through decades.

This is a citizen action organization, meaning that the ideas and completion of projects are accomplished through citizens. In some cases, once a program is in place, or a project is completed, it will be handed over to appropriate agencies or nonprofits to continue. The purpose of Human Decency FIRST is not to run programs, but rather to research and implement ideas that help move the city forward toward recovery.
